Bob Lassiter & Bun E. Carlos And the plot thickens…. |
Actually the two are never on the air together. Former wrestler Gorgeous George joins Lassiter in the first hour to explain the communist American media’s suppression of the truth: that President Kennedy is still alive and well and living on a Greek island. The remainder is open phones, but it culminates in an epic phone call from Lois, the Brandon Brain Lady.

The first half of this clip is actually about bigotry and freedom of speech, specifically on Bob’s radio show. But when he doesn’t get many calls outside of Rocky, he gets annoyed and demands Happy Talk that doesn’t offend anyone for the rest of the show. Only Bob can turn Happy Talk into something so aggressive.

Bob has two long conversations on this Friday show: one with the caller who was known as “Mr. Boycott” on WPLP–Bob accuses Mr. Boycott of being obsessed with him, and if this call’s any indication he’s right on the money. The other conversation is the famous “Jacob’s Healing Service” call.

Bob conducts a poll regarding government subsidies and bailouts, and who should receive them. Then he spends some time arguing the results and implications with the callers. At the end of this clip is a bit from Tedd Webb’s sports huddle, with Bob sitting in and riffing.

Bob only wants people who support Pat Robertson, or who admit to being racists, to call today and explain why they think the way they do. I’m at least half convinced that the third caller in this clip is actually Rocky.

“A Lincoln Continental just to get from Point A to Point B?” Who will help Bob convince the Muffin to let him buy the white Continental with the burgundy dead-cowskin interior? Why, the audience will! He asks for postcards, and offers free Bucs tickets to the caller who comes up with the best reason that Bob needs to buy the Lincoln.

Thirteen minutes of this have appeared on our site under the title “Prologue to the Lassiter Group.” This clip has that same material, plus more than an hour in which other callers are commenting on the Lassiter Group and other topics. It’s our oldest clip of Bob at WFLA, by the way.

There’s a topic, but not really a question: Bob reflects on the “Auction of the Century,” the selling of JFK memorabilia in New York, as a last chance to grab a piece of an idealistic era that is gone forever. Once the callers get involved, there’s a lot of discussion about the Bay of Pigs invasion–but then things turn back to the never-ending football stadium issue.

A very short clip dealing with two of Bob’s favorite subjects: religion, and Sharon’s gun.

A short clip from the Friday of Neil’s week guesting with Bob in Tampa. Apparently everyone in the studio has come down with Randi Rhodes disease.

The WIOD staff are spending the week broadcasting from WSUN’s studios while the home base in Miami is being remodeled. Neil is sitting in with Bob all week, doing their usual “Topics Are A Bunch of Crap” schmoozing. This is from Tuesday of that week.

It’s a great time to be a regular visitor to this website. We still have almost half of the Keith Newman collection to post, featuring around 100 shows between 1987 and 1990 from WPLP, WFLA, and WLS.
Not only that, but–as you’ve probably noticed–we’ve also recently been sent the collection of one Ms. Ellen Halberstadt: over 300 full-length shows from WFLA, 1996-98.
So, keep checking back. It’ll only get better from here.
In the meantime, join us here as Michael J. West blogs on ‘Dancing with the Stars’!
Actually this clip from Bob’s morning-show days is pretty much a hodgepodge, but the section that’ll hit you the hardest is Bob ruminating on the forthcoming Father’s Day and his relationship with his own father.

A double topic of sorts: Bob discusses (1) an abortion bill being debated by the state legislature in Tallahassee, and (2) the subtle racism embedded in his colleagues’ statement that New York subway shooter Bernhard Goetz “didn’t have a jury of his peers.”
