WPLP 7th Birthday Party

WPLP 570AM | Comments (1) Michael J. West @ 3:03 pm

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a new titleholder for “Oldest Clip on the Site.” The 7th birthday party for WPLP was held at the Bay Area Outlet Mall in Largo, just months after Bob began at the station; the end of David Fowler’s show is first, with Bob hanging out and riffing, then the beginning of Bob’s afternoon drive show.

All kinds of interesting stuff happening here: Bob mentions listening to PLP as he’s driving through Fort Myers; he’s still commuting to Miami to do weekends at WINZ (although he’ll be fired two days after this broadcast). Mention of David Fowler as “the most popular host on WPLP.” Bob bantering with Dateline host Mary “Turner,” whom he’s not even dating yet. And what is perhaps the first one-on-one with Tim Coles, whom Bob claims to have met for the first time “about an hour ago.” For us Lassiter-heads, a real coup, and a historic broadcast.

Critique Lassiter

WFLA 970AM | Comments (1) Michael J. West @ 3:02 pm

This isn’t “Bash Lassiter,” it’s an actual substantive discussion. Bob is in the midst of a five-hour marathon of broadcasting and he’s actually asking for his listeners to offer real criticisms on his show, particularly on what’s gone downhill since he changed time slots. But it’s also Friday, and so at 3:00 he brings in the studio audience.

Gifts from God

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 3:01 pm

Children are “gifts from God,” and God is the only being capable of creating life. Therefore, if sex outside of marriage can’t possibly be a sin if it can result in a child - because if it was, that would amount to God rewarding a sin! Right?

The State of Education

WPLP 570AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 3:01 pm

Bob posits that there’s a serious problem with education in America, and that fixing it should be a national priority - only he doesn’t know how to fix it either. There are some calls from people who want to share their experiences in the schools…none of them are particularly confrontational, but are actually pretty intelligent–even the one from an actual high-school kid.

Advice to the Stars

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 3:00 pm

Not to be confused with advice ABOUT the stars, or anything else you might hear from the Astrologette over on WTKN. This is a forum for callers to give advice to the stars of Tampa Bay talk radio, as to how they might be able to make their shows better. That includes Lassiter, of course.

Clarence Bunnybear in the Bedroom

WSUN 620AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 2:59 pm

Edited from Christmas Tree Lady’s tapes: Bob appears on Gary Spivey’s show talking about Clarence Bunnybear, which inspires a prank call to Passion Phones (”the filthy, vile sex show”). This, in turn, inspires people to call and tease Bob about his supposed appearance on Passion Phones and his bizarre usage of Clarence.

The Great Tuesday Phone-Off

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 2:59 pm

“It’s not really Open Phones. There’s a major difference between a Tuesday Phone-Off and Open Phones–I’ll be damned if I know what it is, but there is nonetheless a major difference….”

Chicken Fat

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 7:29 am

A triple topic today on the Bob Lassiter Show! And callers are invited to choose which one they want to talk about! Choices are: (1) Congress’ reckless and irresponsible military spending; (2) unconscionable layoffs within the Burger King Corporation; and, (3) Bob’s newfound suspcion that pro wrestling isn’t REALLY on the up-and-up. Guess which topic most people want to talk about?

How to Get Fired From McDonald’s

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 7:28 am

Burp? Find creative ways to use forks? Tell people what’s in the fries? Leave excretion on the counter? For better or worse, this is the topic that dominates at least half of Bob’s Friday afternoon studio-audience show today.

Blood Drive

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 7:27 am

No, Bob’s not doing a remote from the Red Cross. This is a continuation of his desire to bring in “new blood,” this time only callers under 25 - well, to be precise, callers who are under 25, have brown hair and green eyes, are from Michigan, and eat cheese. Bob’s got a poll for them.

New Callers Only

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 7:26 am

Bob sets up a fairly complicated premise that requires a minimum number of calls - and he doesn’t get them. It pisses him off enough that he first declares open phones, then decides that he’s sick of the same old bunch of regular callers (none of whom could be bothered with his original topic) and announces that only new callers will be allowed on the show for the rest of the week.

Can of Worms

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 7:26 am

Since all too often, callers to Bob’s show ask if they can “open up a can of worms,” today he invites them specifically to call up and open up a can of worms. This has mixed success, so much so that Bob soon suggests that listeners at home get pen and paper and keep a count of how many real cans of worms are opened, versus the fake cans of worms. Real or fake, most of them are at least somewhat interesting.

March 17, 1989

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 7:25 am

I’ve got no more descriptive title for this show because it’s just too mixed up. It’s a Friday, which means both studio audience and Anything Goes. There’s a long call with “Fez Whatley,” one from the Al Gardner impersonator (who knew there was one?), a few potshots at WTKN’s Jay Marvin and his remote at a Buick dealership, a really dim bulb from Minnesota, tickets to the Renaissance Fair, and some people singing “Happy St. Patty’s Day to Bob.” Other assorted goofiness ensues.

AK-47s and Women’s Bathrooms

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 7:24 am

Could two topics have less to do with each other? A ban on imported AK-47s has just been announced by the (first) Bush Administration, and people are calling in with their opinions. But they’re also calling in to discuss the burning question of whether it’s right to allot women more time in the bathroom.

60 days for $1.39

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 7:24 am

A woman stole a $1.39 pack of cigarettes from a grocery store and got a 60-day jail sentence. Was it too harsh? This is a very short clip, so it’s hard to tell, but Bob seems to suggest that no, it wasn’t - that stealing is stealing, value notwithstanding.
