Prayer for Everything

WFLA 970AM | Comments (1) Michael J. West @ 12:39 am

If everybody is so certain that prayer is the answer, then why don’t we have government-mandated prayer for everything? Shouldn’t the law require us to pray before we drive, so we don’t get into an accident? Shouldn’t Bob need to pray before the show so he doesn’t get bad callers? We don’t, and Bob says it’s because even religious people know that prayer doesn’t work.

What I Really Came to Talk to You About Is…

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 12:39 am

…The holiday weekend.

…Slurpees.

…WWF Wrestling.

…Tomatoes.

…Sophie.

…The dead oak tree.

…Mike Schmidt’s retirement from the Phillies.

…The salaries of public servants.

…Women and babies.

…The way things used to be.

(The last three are what Bob really wants to talk about. Nobody else does though.)

Gorbachev, Democracy’s Hero?

Monologues, WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 12:34 am

It’s 1989, the year of Tiananmen Square and the Wall coming down - and all of a sudden, Western Europe sees Mikhail Gorbachev, not George Bush, as the beacon of democracy in the world. Bob demonstrates that there’s some truth to that and asks, how did we get to this point? We get the opening and closing monologue…but no calls.

The State of Talk Radio

WPLP 570AM | Comments (1) Michael J. West @ 12:33 am

Bob’s discussing both his own contempt for doing radio at night, and his conviction that talk radio is headed down the crapper by its own hand. The ins and outs of the business are discussed, from management to target audiences. There are also two calls, from “Bruce” and “Marvin,” that are actually made by the caller who will become known as The Liar.

State Employees

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 12:32 am

Bob has to make a speech in Miami to Florida state employees, and he has no clue what he’ll say; Mary’s suggested that he ask the audience, so today’s topic is to discuss your experiences with state employees. Once again the show goes out of control pretty quickly, but in this case even those that DO answer the question have some really bizarre things to say. So Bob announces he’s going to punish Mary for the suggestion.

Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth

WPLP 570AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 12:32 am

One of Bob’s most memorable shows at WPLP, he claimed, was the show with Randy “Macho Man” Savage, and here’s a brief snippet of it. Macho Man is on the phone, as is Miss Elizabeth, and he gabs a little bit with Bob and takes some calls in this clip. Bob clearly enjoys every minute of it.

Tampa Bay Talk Radio Hall of Fame

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 12:31 am

Bob conducts a questionnaire (DON’T CALL IT A POLL!) to determine which callers, hosts, individual shows, and memorable moments should go in the Tampa Bay Talk Radio Hall of Fame. Best and Worst categories apply. (Some of the callers that get mentioned haven’t been heard on this site…but they sound really good.)

Dinosaur (12-inch Extended Version)

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 5:36 pm

You’ve heard the monologue. Well, most of it anyway. Here we have the earlier aircheck of the 24-minute monologue, plus its tail end, and the callers who followed. They include legends like Harry, Rosemary, and the famous “Mighty Lassiter” call.

WTKN Bashing

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 5:12 pm

Not that Bob ever needed an excuse to make fun of the former WPLP (in all its mediocre glory), but that’s what’s going on in this short clip. Except, of course, for the last guy, who calls up with great concern about Europe’s slide towards one-world government.

Top Tens

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 2:10 am

Bob creates a Top Ten List category (”Top Ten Things Foxes Can Do to Catch Gary McHenry’s Eye”), fills in Number Ten on the list, and asks the listeners to contribute the other nine. The concept self-destructs almost immediately.

Frank’s Living Room

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 2:09 am

“Lassiter in Your Living Room,” this time at Frank’s apartment in Clearwater (to which Serio gave Bob bad directions), is a lot more similar to the Anything Goes, studio-audience shows. In addition to Frank, there are some reporters doing a story on Bob, and they frequently chatter and laugh in the background. There’s even a call from “Fez Whatley.”

Too Hard on the Elderly

Monologues, WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 2:08 am

A good chunk of a monologue in which Bob recalls an old woman he saw at a remote broadcast while working at WPLP, and a telephone call from that same night in which an old friend tells him that he’s just been too hard on the elderly.

Shaking Your Apathy

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 2:07 am

A response to Tedd Webb’s show from the previous day. Teddy had asked callers when and why they became apathetic to the political goings-on in America. Bob extends that to ask, What will it take for you to shake your apathy and become active and involved again? Yet again, most people don’t really know how to answer the question.

Open Fnortner

WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 2:07 am

(Does anybody actually know how to spell Fnortner?) Another “Lassiter in Your Living Room” show, with Bob quizzing the living room’s owner about her childhood when phones get slow. Includes a call from the Brandon Brain Lady and much discussion of Neil Rogers - sounds like Bob had some problems with Uncle Neil even before the fallout at WSUN.

How Many Kids Is Noriega Worth?

WFLA 970AM | Comments (1) Michael J. West @ 2:06 am

It wasn’t until Bob was at WLS that the U.S. actually invaded Panama, but around this time it was rumored to be in the works, and it was popular among the hawkish crowd that listened to Tedd Webb’s show. Bob simply asks how many young American kids, like the troops in our armed forces, those people are willing to kill in Panama for the sake of deposing Noriega. Ends with a great monologue that unfortunately gets cut off before the end.
