Bob’s Ethics (Answering Oscar)

Monologues, WFLA 970AM | Comments (1) Michael J. West @ 5:08 pm

Bob addresses Oscar’s accusations from the day before in a long, thoughtful monologue. It’s a show about ethics, both personal and professional, and both Bob’s and Oscar’s.

China

Monologues, WFLA 970AM | Comments (1) Michael J. West @ 5:04 pm

One of Bob’s most fiery monologues, this one takes place the day after the Chinese Army massacred protesters in Tiananmen Square. George H.W. Bush threatens to cut off arms sales to China and up their interest rates on the world market. Why, Bob asks, does America not have the balls to take on Deng Xiaopeng? Why were we so willing to take action in Nicaragua and Afghanistan, where the Commies never mowed down masses of citizens in the street? Why won’t Bush speak as harshly of Deng as he does of the Democrats?

Bible Contradictions and Absurdities

Monologues, WPLP 570AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 5:32 am

One of Bob Lassiter’s absolute masterpieces. He examines the Bible in-depth, beginning at Genesis 1 and continuing right on through, pointing out the contradictions, absurdities, and sometimes even the history behind the stories as he comes to them. A full 90 minutes is given over to Bob’s monologue. Even if you believe the Bible is the literal word of God, you’ll be impressed.

Divorce and Children

Monologues, WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 5:20 am

A brilliant but quite heartbreaking installment as Bob traces his childhood via the story of his parents’ marriage and divorce. The long monologue inspires calls about the hardships of divorce and the nightmare it can perpetrate on children even long after the divorce is final. And to think it all started because a 19-year-old girl demanded more monologues from Bob.

Gorbachev, Democracy’s Hero?

Monologues, WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 12:34 am

It’s 1989, the year of Tiananmen Square and the Wall coming down - and all of a sudden, Western Europe sees Mikhail Gorbachev, not George Bush, as the beacon of democracy in the world. Bob demonstrates that there’s some truth to that and asks, how did we get to this point? We get the opening and closing monologue…but no calls.

Too Hard on the Elderly

Monologues, WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 2:08 am

A good chunk of a monologue in which Bob recalls an old woman he saw at a remote broadcast while working at WPLP, and a telephone call from that same night in which an old friend tells him that he’s just been too hard on the elderly.

Dinosaur

Monologues, WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 12:36 am

The day after raging at his listeners for not giving a damn about anti-Semitism, Bob comes in and opens with an apology for venting his pent-up anger at work. Then he explains that he’s a dinosaur - a man who’s out of his time, because he gets upset when he sees injustice, ignorance, and selfishness. A riveting monologue of almost 25 minutes.

The Business

Monologues, WFLA 970AM | Comments (0) Michael J. West @ 3:02 am

I can’t say for sure, but everything about the tone and content of this monologue suggests that it’s the closing of Lassiter’s last show on December 1, 1999. It’s a diatribe against the current nature of the radio business and in fact the nature of all business - everybody trying to screw everybody else. (If someone can confirm the date on this, please leave a comment and help us out!)

Something has been going on with Ron Diaz and people are starting to talk & speculate. Finally, it is revealed that Ron’s wife has been diagnosed with aids. This leads to a monologue about why so many of us do so little, especially when it comes to educating our children.

Radio For One

Monologues, Photos, WFLA 970AM | Comments (1) Administrator @ 12:42 am

A no holds barred look at the underbelly of radio! One of Bob’s finest moments in broadcasting as an industry once operated by broadcasters is bought out by financial speculators, eliminating thousands of jobs along the way. Middle management hacks rein supreme as soul & community are thrown to the curb & pissed on. Twenty six years in the making, Lassiter comes out swinging like an engine of controlled fury through the greed & corruption of an industry gone mad!

Here is a link to the story in the St. Petersburg Times that helped spur this monologue on.
